Punk’s Not Dead
February 14, 2007
It was too good. 3 bedrooms with large yard above the college for $1695. We pulled onto the street and immediately pegged it as a “renter’s” street; junky yards and peeling paint. As it happened the place was empty, save for a handful of plastic chairs. We snooped around and found an open door. I can’t believe prop owners in this town get away with what they do. This ramshackle Ma & Pa Kettle compound was, as Sam would say, wretched. I really can’t begin to describe how ghetto the bathroom and kitchen were. The floors in most of the place were concrete. Bad vibes. The “yard” was overgrown with giant tree stumps every three feet. Tony and I were laughing as we were touring the place and joking about how it reminded us of a punk rock crash pad. That’s when we saw it. Painted over one of the interior doorways in black spray paint: “Punk’s Not Dead.” And to think all these years I thought it was.

wait, the floors were…concrete?! i gather that you were sneaking in without the owner’s permission. maybe he’s planning on, like, putting in carpeting and replacing the fixtures. then again, $1675 for a house, sadly, says not likely.

I’m pretty sure the ad said the house was ready for move-in. You think $1700 is cheap for a house? Geez.

Unfortunately, for a 3 bedroom house in Ventura, $1700 definitely seems to be on the low end of the going rate. Do you know what the square ft. is?
Do you know how long it’s been vacant? I’m wondering if the owner is just looking to get a renter that’s desperate enough for a house in the area and also crazy enough to be willing to do all the necessary upgrades and yard cleanup on their own.
Then, of course, he’d probably hike the rent back up to $2000+ once he had a more attractive property.
Of course, that’s all speculation, but the sad part is that plan would probably work.

I’m not sure Ventura’s worth it anymore.

cheap is relative. would i pay $1700 for a house even if i could? hell no, but it seems to be much less than others are willing to pay.

I think you may have this already but VChomefinders.com has a courtesy rental list that is often updated.
